Signals of a Summer Shift; New Flower Shop Hours!

June 15, 2021 By luke

We experienced a noticeable shift in season last week – and not just because of 90 degree temps! The first of our summer field crops came into bloom (ammobium and borage are listed online this week), the latest of our spring crops (peonies!) finished blooming, the greenhouse is emptying out as more and more plants make their way to the fields, and, most of all, the summer flush of weeds is upon us (see how we handle it in this week’s video!)
Good weed control makes for a HAPPY DOG! Brick-a-brax approves!

Expanded Sunday Store Hours are here! (…but now closed on Wednesday)

We’ve officially made the decision to remain open through the weekend for the summer season! In addition, we’ve decided to close our Flower Shops’ doors on Wednesdays for now.  Wednesday has been a slower sales day for us and we simply need to put more time into the farm early week to make sure that we’re keeping up on the important work of seeding-planting-weeding-watering-harvesting that makes for happy customers and for happy farmers, too!

Closed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (…out working the farm!)

Thursday – Sunday: 10:00 – 4:30

Veggie Shares from MX Morningstar Farm begin this week!

Pickup is at the Tiny Hearts Flower Shop (if you had requested this as a pickup location at the time of purchase!) on your self selected day of either Friday or Saturday from 10 – 4:30pm.

Here’s a quick note from our friends at MX about this weeks veggie box:

“It’s hard to believe that the Summer 2021 CSA begins so soon. Here on the farm we have been preparing for the beginning of your CSA for months, and yet I still feel that all of May passed too fleetingly and that we have arrived somewhat brusquely in the midst of true Summer. Perhaps the volatility of this Spring’s weather has kept us in a never-bored state, allowing us to feel time passing too quickly for our taste. But alas, lettuce waits for no one. We are excited to see you all each week, talk vegetables (ex: is a sweet potato a potato? Is swiss chard a friend or foe?), and hopefully hear about all the great recipes you’re cooking.”

Peak Peony season has finally arrived (…after a 3 year grow-on time!)

June 7, 2021 By luke

This weekends sweltering heat wave has our peony patch popping blooms faster than we can pick them! We’re very pleased with the quality of this seasons’ long awaited stems — these plants are well established after a three year grow on time and we can now cut them with reckless abandon without endangering the plants overall well-being.  In this heat, we’ll be sure to water them heavily for the next two months which will ensure an even more bountiful harvest next year! You won’t find some of these sought after varieties anywhere else, we’ve been sure to plant some really unique and appealing plants which we know you’ll LOVE!

Also…We’re now extending our Flower Shop hours and will be open through Sunday! Please see below for more details!

Patiently waiting on flowers…

May 31, 2021 By luke

We have limited availability this week as we wait for the next crops to come into bloom! Last week’s heat wave knocked out our anemones and ranunculus and the crazy cold Memorial Day weekend slowed down incoming blooms. Weather’s not the only thing to blame, though – we usually experience a gap this time of year, as the spring crops come to an end and we’re waiting for our summer field crops to really hit!
Take a video tour with Jenny as she shows you what’s on tap in the fields and greenhouses!

Late Spring Beauties in-bloom this week: Colibri Poppies!

May 24, 2021 By luke

You’ll notice that our post is a little more brief this week.  Things are really getting busy on the farm and we have less time in the office these days.  We’re watering a ton during this dry spell, planting out thousands of seedlings, keeping a regular weeding schedule and sending out lots of orders for flowers and arrangements! We’ll be sure to keep up with our video updates and featured flowers each week and you can trust that you’ll find the most up-to-date availability list on our website! Also, POPPIES!

High Temps Signal Change of Season!

May 17, 2021 By luke

With temperatures headed high this week, we’ll be seeing a big change in the season! Cool-loving ranunculus and anemone will stop flowering in the heat, and the last of the tulips were just pulled out of the ground this morning. We’re still expecting to have ranuncs through the week, and maybe the last few next week even, but get your hands on these last bunches before they’re gone for another year. Tulips store beautifully with their bulbs on so we’re hoping to keep those in stock for the next several weeks!

Next up? Our third greenhouse is about to come into production, with sweet-smelling stock, bright-colored snapdragons, and winding sweet peas! Out in the peony fields, we’re seeing lots of buds but are probably at least a couple of weeks out on those.

Well, we’re happy to report that the weather has been just perfect for this cool loving plant and we’re very grateful to have a BUMPER crop coming in from the fields, just in time for one of the busiest flower weeks of the year, Mother’s Day! Our weekly availability list is now live on the website and we have some really fantastic new varieties coming in, alongside some thoughtful gifts that the mother in your life will LOVE!
